And that ye
study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work
with your own hands, as we commanded you; That ye may walk honestly
toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.
1 Thessalonians 4:11, 12
Take a piece of cardboard thick
enough to make a firm foundation, and on this draw a pattern
similar to the one below, enlarge to the size desired for your
box. Cut out the cardboard all around the outline of the diagram.
Bend the four pieces which are intended to form the four sides.
Do this while following the lines carefully, so the bottom of
the box will be quite even. Straighten the cardboard again and
cut two pieces of heavy fabric, each one covering entirely the
piece of cardboard which includes the bottom and the sides of
the workbox. Cut the material about a quarter of an inch larger
all around the cardboard to allow for turning the edges, which
otherwise would fray and look untidy; glue (or overcast) the
heavy fabric on the cardboard, back and front. When this is
done, let dry for one day (if using glue).

Then bend your covered cardboard as you did before. Join the
corners(A) together by sewing the heavy fabric on the two sides
with the over-and-under stitch, using a needle with strong thread
to secure the corners, top and bottom, very firmly. The same
thing must be repeated in the corners marked (B),(C),(D).
The workbox now stands, which is covered and lined. Some cord
sewn round the base of the box will make a neat finish and slightly
raise the box. Now the cover must be made. Cut a piece of cardboard
to fit exactly on the top of the workbox; then, before putting
on the heavy fabric as you have done before on the other part,
put on a layer of padding, and cover over with the fabric. Do
this on both sides taking care to turn in the edges, as described
for the other parts of the box, before gluing down the fabric.
A strip of material is fixed on the inside of the lid, and sewn
in regular intervals, to receive a thimble, a pair of scissors,
crochet needle, and other things. The cover is now put on the
box part by slipping two small pieces of heavy fabric under
both cover and back of the box. One on each side, to form hinges,
these are then sewn very firmly, so that the lid can open and
close.
This would be a delightful gift to make for Momma or Grandmother.
